.Surname
domain names
Is
.Surname
legal owner of the
offered Top-Level-Domains?
No, .Surname does not own the Intellectual Property
of a certain surname (or last name/family name) extension like Smith
or Robinson or .surname domain name like www.peter.smith or
www.mary.robinson. As a registry we provide the possibility to
pre-register surname domain names. We strongly believe that .surname
domain names should be shared by the community of all people of that
particular surname. Each individual registrant who pre-registered a
.surname domain name with us is owner of this particular domain
name, e.g. www.peter.smith
.Surname
offers .surname domain names as a registry, not as owner of a
.surname domain name.
.Surname
applied for trademarks in major countries
including the United States and European Union countries. In fact,
by offering .surname domain names to the public, .Surname
is legal owner of
the Intellectual Property related .Surname and other terms used in
commerce.
What does a .Surname customer owns?
A customer is legal owner and the pre-registered
proprietor of its .surname domain name (e.g. www.peter.smith) when
pre-registering with .Surname. The customer will own the domain name
until renewal. All pre-registered .surname domain names will be
stored in the public Whois database available on our website.
What is
the different approach .Surname is following
compared to most other new TLD registries?
Compared to most other registry providers of new TLDs .Surname
believes that only an ICANN regulated DNS will succeed on the
long-term. We will apply at ICANN for adding all pre-registered
.surname TLDs to the root server system. Some other providers of new
TLDs in contrast rely on alternative root models.
What's the
advantage compared to the .name TLD?
The .name TLD was
the first attempt to broaden the name space for individuals by a new
TLD. However .name is just another TLD like .com or .info, at the
end of the day nothing has changed - only one person with a surname
e.g. Smith has the chance to register a
www.smith.name.
In contrast
.Surname domains are the shortest and most intuitive way to name
individuals on the web. We are convinced that this is the best
approach to identify a person. .Surname offers real surname domain
names!
When
will the .surname domain names work like other TLDs?
Please find here our timeline with details when we expect the
.Surname TLDs are going to be fully operational. However, we meanwhile may add services (e.g. DNS
servers, plug-ins), which make .surname domain names accessible to a
part of the internet community.
Will there be refunds if .Surname does not get
into the official DNS?
Each
.surname domain name and .surname TLD registered supports the
expansion of the domain name system and helps to make the Internet
as user friendly as possible. For these and the reasons mentioned
above, there will be no refunds, if for any reason .Surname will not
succeed to bring the .surname TLDs to live.
Can surname Domain Names be sold after registration?
Yes. The only provision is that the other party also
has to register with .Surname. This process will be introduced
later.
Does .Surname support Internationalized Domain
Names (IDNs)?
Yes
we are supporting IDNs, however, we are starting with West-European characters. Other characters like
Chinese, Japanese, Korean,Arabic, Indian, Thai, Greek, Russian and
others will follow soon.
Will
the .Surname domain names appear on major search
engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo?
Yes,
each pre-registered surname domain name and .Surname
TLD will be recognised by search engine spiders and will appear in
search engine results.
What about speculators and grabbing?
Our
registration process requires rights for each registration,
nevertheless we won’t be able to avoid grabbing and/or bad faith
completely. We attempt to discourage this with an ICANN conform UDRP
policy and/or by of no activation or deletion of the .surname domain
name. .Surname will not, and for that matter can not police domain
names for any kind of Intellectual Property. Everyone
pre-registering a .surname domain name acknowledges that he's not
knowingly infringing upon anyone's trademark. If you find a .surname
domain name that you feel is infringing upon your Intellectual
Property (trade mark, surname, service mark etc), please contact the
individual or organization, that pre-registered the domain name,
directly – we’ll provide the contact details in our Whois database.
We will remove or transfer a domain name at a validated request of
the owner, a court of proper jurisdiction, or an ICANN UDRP panel.
